ALABASTER GLASS - COLOURED OPALINE GLASS

The aim is to develop a type of opaline glass – alabaster glass – that is old and new at the same time. Controlled opacity of the glass produces a slightly translucent look. Alabaster glass is white in its basic form, but it can also be coloured a number of pastel colours.

Background
Alabaster glass is a type of opaline glass that can today be produced in an environment-friendly way without the addition of fluorides or chlorides.
The switch to alabaster glass eliminates the problems earlier fluor-based opalines had with unwanted/uncontrolled opacity changes during production.

Example of alabaster glass.

Procedure
The quality of the alabaster glass that exists today needs improving.
There will be an optimisation of the melting process at medium scale, 50-150 kilo glass.

A complete palette of pastel coloured alabaster glass is to be produced.
Coloured alabaster is used as an overlay or underlay together with clear glass.
Users are expected to be traditional glassworks and studios.
The alabaster glass to be developed will be tested in production over a lengthy period.

Then variations in transparency (opacity) will be tested and adapted to achieve the desired degree of translucency. The alabaster glass will be tested at full scale using various techniques, in the first instance with moulding and centrifugation.
