LINNEAUS UNIVERSITY COLOUR SYSTEM - AN EXPERT SYSTEM FOR SIMULATING AND VISUALISING COLOURED GLASS

The purpose is to develop an expert system for predicting the colour of a glass product in the NCS system.

Background
Since it was founded in 1945, Glafo has been assigned to develop a large number of glass colours, which has resulted in a comprehensive colour archive of almost 3000 unique samples.

When creating a new colour, each glass sample is optimised successively in order to acquire the desired nuance. The process has been totally empirical - through creating a recipe, mixing, homogenising and melting raw materials, and finally cooling down the test pieces. In more recent times, test pieces have also been ground and polished in order to create optical characteristics and the measurement of colour coordinations in the L*a*b-system. This is time consuming work.

Benefits of the expert system
The idea is that the development of the expert system will provide a tool that:

- will make it possible to study the connection between L*a*b- and the NCS system, which is more commonly used by paint shops.

- will virtually present the correct glass colour nuance

- will facilitate determining an exact glass colour in discussions between the customer and the dealer/painter.

- can be used to produce new glass colour nuances faster and cheaper.

- can be used for the replacement of raw materials such as, for example, nickel, which is now being phased out for environmental reasons

- can be used in the recycling of coloured broken glass (which reduces environmental impact and therefore disposal costs)

The project is being run jointly by Glafo, Linné University and the glass industry.
