CRYSTALLISATION STUDY OF A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT MINERAL WOOL COMPOSITIONS


The aim is to find out more about how the properties of mineral wool fibre are affected by the occurrence of crystals.

A mineral wool melt that is free of crystals can be produced by using pure raw materials. We have already been able to confirm that the addition of nucleation agents can produce crystals even in melts made from pure raw materials. Titanium dioxide, which is always present in industrial raw materials, probably influences this crystallisation. Can phosphorous, which is also present in the mineral wool melts, have a similar affect?

There are fibres that have been produced in the laboratory from melts with greater variations in composition than could be achieved in an industrial process. Can any correlation be found in these melts between established properties and level of crystallisation?
