REPLACEMENT OF SELENIUM IN BOTTLE GLASS
The aim of the project is to identify an effective, environmentally
sound decolourising agent that can successfully replace selenium in
the manufacture of bottle glass.
Background
Selenium is used as a decolourising agent in the manufacture of colourless
bottle glass. It is, however, extremely volatile, which, in glassmaking,
gives rise to certain problems. During melting at the high temperatures
– between 1450°C and 1500°C – commonly used for
the manufacture of bottle glass, more than 90% is lost by evaporation
through the chimney. This is not only harmful to the environment but
is also a considerable disadvantage from an economic standpoint, since
selenium is a relatively expensive raw material.
Replacing selenium
with a substance capable of decolourising glass to a similar or even
better degree would help keep the bottle glass industry moving steadily
forwards and make it easier to fulfil its ambition of satisfying the
market’s demands for increasingly clear glass.
