SPECTROPHOTOMETRIC QUANTIFICATION OF COLOURING ELEMENTS IN GLASS
(P9912)

The aim of the project is to develop a quick and secure quantification of colouring components in glass. Quantification and characterisation shall be in the glass directly with only a little or non-existent preparing of samples.

The work on developing a quick and secure quantification of colouring elements in glass samples is done in cooperation with other present projects.

Spectrophotometric analysis of glass samples directly
We have started to investigate how to analyse colouring components directly in the glass. The spectral data, obtained at the spectrophotometric analysis of glass samples, will be corrected for spread light.

Quantification of colouring trace elements
Cobalt and nickel are used both as a colouring agent and for decolouring. Cobalt is strongly colouring and its level in the glass is below our normal detection limits.

We will test to quantify the content of cobalt, selenium and iron to possibly improve the correlation between the real content of the colouring elements and spectra in the samples.

Striking studies
Optimisation at striking studies is done by means of a spectrophotometer, which can scan over the visible wave range rapidly. This can be done repeatedly at intervals of some minutes, to be able to follow the rapid change of the colour that might happen at high temperatures.
