DEMONSTRATION AND APPLICATION OF SEM (P9911)

The aim is to show the personnel at different departments of Växjö University how Glafo’s SEM - Scanning Electron Microscope can be used for investigations and analyses of different materials.

Background
SEM can be used for taking pictures with high magnification of most materials. In combination with EDS – Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy is it possible to find out which elements the different parts of a sample contain.

At Glafo SEM is used for the research and commission work, e.g. to analyse glass defects. However, we also perform commissions regarding metals, biological materials, wood and paper.

Seminar In May 2005 an appreciated seminar was arranged for different departments at Växjö University. Postgraduate students and researchers from the departments “Forest and Wood”, “Machine technology” and “Bio energy technology” participated. Also the departments “Chemistry” and “Physics” have shown interest, but they could not participate on that occasion. Test runs and further work
We have run tests on some different materials, e.g. catalysts and wood. This spring we will contact those again who have shown interest and offer them to test SEM of their own applications. We will also build up the competence regarding the sample preparing technique for different materials, e.g. to see the fibre structure in wood samples.
