ENHANCED FUNCTIONALITY OF SELF-CLEANING AND ANTIBACTERIAL SURFACE COATINGS - FUNCOAT
(P4453)

The aim is to transfer a newly developed and tested nano-coating technique to commercial applications in cooperation between research companies and industry.

Recent research has lead to a process, which in a single step results in surfaces with self-cleaning, photo-catalytic, and anti-bacterial properties. It might be of interest for example at producing self-cleaning windows and sanitary wares.

Nano-particles of titanium oxide/silver are generated by liquid flame spraying and deposited on glass or ceramic tiles. The deposition takes place in a hot environment, setting special requirements for equipment. The process parameters will be optimized for industrial applica-tion and the technique will be used for end products, which then are tested and evaluated.

Project duration: May 2006 - December 2007.

Project participants:
ABR Innova Oy, Finland
Beneq Oy, Finland
Crystal Fibre, Denmark
Glafo, The Glass Research Institute, Sweden
Icetec - Technological Institute of Iceland, Iceland
IDO Bathroom Ltd, Sweden
Lund University – Nanocrystals group, Sweden
Micronova / Helsinki University of Technology – Microelectronics Centre, Finland
University of Helsinki – Inorganic Chemistry, Finland
