Reactive batch
(P1203)

The aim is to use alternative raw materials, which make for a smaller amount of gas in the batch from the beginning, and improve the melting process in such a way that less cullet is required.

Background
There is an increasing need of cullet at glass melting. The reason is that today the working-out of the pots is done in a quite different way than before. The new crystal glasses require some more time to melt in pots and it is more difficult to get a glass with no bubbles. To meet the great demands on the quality, compensation in the form of an addition of a rather large amount of cullet is needed for the worked-out pots.

Realisation
By this project we want to attain improved batch reactions by changing different raw materials without changing the glass composition. It is a question of making the batch as free from gas – except air as possible from the start! That can be realized by using raw materials, which do not contain carbon dioxide and raw materials with another grain size.

At first we will make an inventory of available alternative raw materials and the costs for these. Then these raw materials are tested in a melting test according to Glafo’s standard method.

By means of the image processing program (Image Pro) is it possible to count the bubbles in glass “pucks” for refining studies as well as evaluate unmelted material to control the melting properties.
