LOW-MELTING UNLEADED GLASS (P4449)

This is a continuation of last year’s project PR 444 with the aim to decrease the energy consumption with at least 15 % by lowering the melting and working temperature. By industrial melting of low-melting glass for longer periods than was possible before, we will be able to make an economical cost estimate of the savings.

Refining and decolouring
This year’s project is concentrating on the refining process, which has not been functioning satisfactory with the low melting temperature of the low-melting glass. In connection with the refining studies we will also develop the decolouring.

Longer and more extensive trial periods
To obtain more data we will increase the number and the volume of full-scale tests. That is important to be able to evaluate the energy savings correctly.

This year tests with different production techniques will be performed to eventually be able to optimise the properties of the glass for the most appropriate techniques.

Economic evaluation
Finally we are going to make a total economic calculation of what it means to melt the low-melting glasses.
