IN-VITRO DISSOLUTION TESTS OF INSULATION FIBRES
- PR
375
The
long-term aim is to replace experiments on animals with leaching tests.
In the short term, our aim is to show that the leaching test of EURIMA
is reproducible.
The EUCEB trademark
Today all
mineral fibre compositions on the market must be tested on rats (in-vivo
tests) in order to receive the EUCEB (European Certification Board for
Mineral Wool Products)trademark.
As the tests are costly, performed only in specialised laboratories
and take long time – the aim is to replace these tests with in-vitro
testing, i.e. leaching tests.
Leaching
test development
All leaching
tests are performed in three different laboratories: Heraklith in Austria,
Paroc in Finland and at Glafo in Sweden.
We are using the guidelines published by the European Insulation Manufacturers
Association (EURIMA) in April 2000 to perform tests on a set of seven
different fibres distributed within the group of laboratories.
All fibres were prepared at Glafo prior to testing. It was further decided
to conduct the testing at two different pH values, pH 4.5 and pH 7.4,
respectively.
Preliminary comparisons
show good agreement between the results obtained in the different laboratories.
