RECYCLING OF FOUNDRY SAND (PR 434)
The Swedish foundries produce 200 000 - 250 000 tonnes of waste sand per year. It is quite likely that some of this waste could be reused for producing mineral wool. Not all this sand can be used as there are different requirements for sand in the foundry industry and for glass fibre production. The level of chromium may not be too high and quite some foundries uses sand with high levels of chromium. The foundries use adhesives to maintain the shape of the moulds. It is not known how these adhesives will interfere with the fibre production.

The goal of this project is the reuse of foundry sand for fibre production. This involves investigating which sand could be used and if some pretreatment of the sand will be necessary. It is a joint project between Glafo, Gjuteriföreningen, Mefos and the industry.
