NEW POT MATERIALS
- INDUSTRIAL TRIALS (PR183) - finished 1999
Natural clays are used as basic material for those pots used
today at melting of art and household glasses for manual production.
In the Scandinavic countries about 60 % of all glass production
is hand made glasses. The objective with this project is to find
alternative and better material for pot melting.
Glass defects from the pot
The glass is melted discontinous in a pot and has a direct contact
with the pot material. The pot material is not resistent to glass
so the pot will give rise to stones or cords.More resisitant
material like alumina-zirconia refractories for tanks minimize
this problem and improve the glass quality.

A pot made of zirconmullite
sawed in two. At right an enlargement of the pot showing the
glass attack in the glass line.
Improved glass quality
During the latest years considerable efforts have been made to
increase the glass quality. The melting process has been improved
by better raw material and batch mixing and new modern technics
have been introduced for control and regulation of the furnaces. The
furnace constructions have also been improved.
Since a lot of efforts have been made to improved quality, now
the industry has the ambition to improve the glass quality by
reducing the defects which originate from the pot material.
