MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF CRYSTALLINE GLASSES (PR182) - finished in 1999

Background
In cold working of hollow wares cracks and flakes can sometimes arise in a way which is very difficult to explain. The cracking off, edge melting and edge grinding can give these problems. The objective is to get more knowledge about the mechanical properties of this type of glass and find methods to measure properties connected to brittleness of glass.

Periodic variation of the brittleness?
Glass workers have a feeling of seasonal appeareance of brittle glass. The experience is that this occur late autumn or winter time, a period when the humidity of the air is lowest. Chemical analysis of the glass and a lot of measuring of physical properties have not given any explanations to this periodic classification of brittle glass.

 Spricka i glas
Why does the glass crack more often during certain periods?

Results
Measuring of the mechanical properties of glasses classified as both brittle and normal can not give any statistical proof for a connection between a special mechanical property and brittle glass. Factors of much more importance are the shape of the glass or the control and adjustment of the machinery. With the knowledge gained from this project the rejects because of brittle glass have been lowered.
