NON NITRATE REFINING (PR181)
- finished 1999

Refining without nitrate
Alkalinitrate is the oxidising part of the refining agent used by most handmade and crystal glass producers. Antimony oxide and/or arsenic oxide are almost always the oxidised component.

Unwanted reaction
The breakdown of nitrate leads to the production of acidifying nitrogen oxides. In electrically heated furnaces the nitrate is the dominant source of NOx-gases. Also in oil or gas heated furnaces the emission of NOx-gases will be reduced considerably if nitrate is not added to the batch mixture.

glass sample with bubbles

By counting bubbles in a sample one can see how effective different refining agents are.

How to avoid refining agents with nitrate
The goal of this project is to map the possibilities of avoiding nitrate containing refining agents in the refining of handmade and crystal glass with antimony or arsenic. Some alternative refining agents are investigated. At the same time reference material for refining by using a well known combination of refining components were studied.
