GLASS EDUCATION
Every year Glafo provides several tailor-made courses - for indivuduals
or groups. The courses can last from half a day to several days depending
on the subject and information need.
If you have something specific that you or your company would need to
know more about when it comes to glass properties you are welcome to
contact us for an offer.
Course in Glass Technology, 3 half
days
A course
in glass with practical aim and direction
This course gives a survey of what makes glass such an unique material
compared to other materials. How the glass properties can be tailormade
to fit different manufacturing techniques and applications.
There will be a lot of practical information on things to be considered
when designing and manufacturing glass. What is to be considered when
choosing raw materials? What happens when the raw material is melting?
How do you avoid glass defects? Colouring glass, how is that made? Advice
when choosing furnaces and refractory materials. How can one save energy
and protect the environment? This and much more is questions that is
discussed during the three half days.

Inspiration
course in glass
A six lesson “Inspiration course in glass” for universities
and colleges was produced by Glafo at the request of Glasbranschföreningen
- GBF and Svensk Planglasförening - SPF.
The PowerPoint
material, including the teachers’ texts, can be ordered from GBF
(in Swedish).
IN COOPERATION WITH
LINNAEUS UNIVERSITY
Glafo
cooperates with Linnaeus University, former Växjö University.
Glafo personell has been involved in course planning, writing study
literature and giving lectures.
GLASS
PROFESSORS, HONORARY DOCTOR AND POSTGRADUATE STUDENTS
Since a couple of years glass
has been given high priority at Växjö University.
1999 - Stellan
Persson, MD at Glafo, holds a part-time professorship in glass technology
at the university with the aim to create a research and development
unit as well as educational programmes for glass technology and glass
design.
2002 - Torun
Bring begun her work as postgraduate student in 2002.
2003 - The
glass artist Bertil Vallien, Åfors glassworks, was made honorary
doctor.
2004 - Glafo, the Glass Research Institute, moved to
Växjö University.
2005
- The glass designer Erika Lagerbielke, Orrefors Glassworks, was appointed
associate professor in glass design.
2005 - Ph D Bo Jonson, Växjö University and
Glafo, was appointed professor in glass technology.
2006
- Torun Bring
defended her doctor's thesis on "red glass" during the autum.
Postgraduate
student, Lina Grund started her work on fining during the spring.
2008
- A new postgraduate student Stefan Karlsson begun his work on local
chemical hardening.
INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION
ICG
- International Commission on Glass
Glafo is working in the technical committee TC23 of ICG (International
Commission on Glass) that promotes needed education and further training
worldwide in the glass technical field.
The aim is to coordinate
the study literature and the education plans. At the ICG Congress in
San Francisco in July 1998 TC23 presented a specification of ca 160
glass technical books, and a poster on the eduction level of glass technology
worldwide.
Virtual
Glass Academy - a pedagogical model for net-based learning (e-learning)
with multimedia support
Glafo run a pilot project within
the Leonardo da Vinci programme 2002-2004. Eleven partners from five
countries worked together. Read more on the project

Training of trainers - education for
glass teachers
Together with glassworks, glass schools and research institutes in Europe
Glafo has taken part in the education project Leonardo da Vinci, financed
by EC. The aim was to produce study literature for further education
of teachers and instructors at glass schools.
Glafo has participated also in
other EC projects, e.g. ADAPT with the aim to provide glass workers
with further education.
